Field Experience

Students seeking an Education major have access to the Quincy University Reading Center. The Center offers a well-equipped laboratory experience that blends theory and practice for potential teachers. In addition to the well-established Brenner Library, the School of Education enjoys the benefits of the Instructional Materials Center (IMC). The IMC is a special library that houses materials of immediate support to Elementary Education.

Preparation includes classroom instruction, professional laboratory experience, and clinical involvement. Content taught in authentic settings, which allows teacher candidates to experience content in real life experiences. Field experience includes both upper and lower level courses taught in the actual K-12 settings with direct interaction with K-12 students.

The School of Education utilizes a Professional Development School (PDS) model. Literature shows that the leadership skills and instructional effectiveness of PDS interns exceed those of student teachers trained in a traditional teacher preparation program. At QU candidates spend part of the class time directly interacting with K-12 students in structured activities directly tied to the course curriculum. Compared to traditional student teachers, PDS interns are provided more exposure to the full range of teacher duties, becoming more comfortable with full teaching responsibilities and more knowledgeable about the school, the K-12 students and faculty, and the instructional program.
