QU POLIS: The Ancient Case For and Against Democracy

October 2, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

It is common to trace the roots of modern democracy to Ancient Greece. Ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle had a profound understanding of the merits, faults, potential, and pitfalls of democratic governments and democratic societies. This class will survey their assessments of democracy and consider what these might tell us about the prospects for American democracy.
