The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its All-American and post-season All-Region lists on June 5. Quincy University’s head baseball coach Matt Schissel was named National Coach of the Year for leading the Hawks in a historic season.

Schissel and the Hawks went 47-11 on the season, beating the 1999 team record of 43 wins in a season. Schissel guided the team to both GLVC regular season and GLVC tournament championships. This was the first time in QU baseball history that a team won the regular season outright and the conference tournament in the same year.

Schissel led the QU baseball team to secure a first seed in the NCAA tournament, allowing the Hawks to compete in the regional and super-regional at home. The Hawks secured the Midwest Regional 1 title in three games but fell in two games to the University of Indianapolis in the super-regionals, just missing the opportunity to go to the Division II College World Series.

Coach Schissel has been the QU head baseball coach for two years. In those two seasons, Schissel led the Hawks to two NCAA tournaments berths, both finishing in the Midwest Super-Regional, and to a regular season GLVC championship and a GLVC tournament championship.

Schissel’s overall record of 84-36 is the best in QU program history. In his last 100 games, Schissel went 73-27, which is among the best 100-game records in the nation.

In this season alone, Coach Schissel has been named GLVC Coach of the Year unanimously, NCBWA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, and NCBWA National Coach of the Year.
