As a child, Carlson had a strong interest in art. His father was a former art student and encouraged his interest. His recent work uses line and color of all his influences, that he admired as a child, to express his feelings. It presents a split-second of his personality, represented by some obvious and some personal associations, splayed to fill the surface of a painting.

“Doing what I do for a living makes me hungry to display my creativity. This is my outlet to tell stories,” says Carlson. “I try to keep the paintings narrative enough to provide a subject for the work, but on the other hand, they are very personal, and some of the elements have to be cryptic and open for interpretation.”
