After eleven seasons, there will be a new head baseball coach at Quincy University. Former head coach and new athletic director, Josh Rabe, announced the internal promotion of Matt Schissel to become the twelfth head coach in program history.

Schissel has spent the previous five seasons with the Hawk baseball program both as a graduate assistant and head assistant after he became the pitching coach midway through the 2018 season.

“Matt has shown our program the utmost loyalty and respect.  He has treated this program as his own from day one, and it shows in our results that we have had on and off the field.  I am so happy he is getting this opportunity to guide Hawk baseball into a new era,” said athletic director, Josh Rabe.

Under Schissel, the Hawks advanced to their first World Series in 2017 and won back-to-back GLVC Tournament titles in 2017 and 2018. In his first year of taking over as the pitching coach, the Hawks’ staff posted a team-ERA of 3.83, which was the lowest it had been since 2015. Schissel also helped coach and develop QU’s newest pitching record-holder and All-American Riley Martin.

When asked about this next step in his coaching journey Schissel stated, “It’s a surreal feeling. Quincy University is a special place. I’m excited for the opportunity and challenge of becoming the next head coach of this baseball program. Everything so far in my baseball journey has led me to this point and there’s no place I’d rather be.”

The Milan, Illinois native will be handed the keys to a program that has gone to six straight NCAA Regionals, won the GLVC Tournament twice since 2017, and has had 30 or more wins in seven straight seasons.

Schissel was very punctuated on what he looks forward to most about his new role. “Continuing the winning tradition that this program is known for. Through my time here, I’ve coached and met a lot of great QU baseball alumni. Those guys built this place, and that’s something that I’m excited to continue.”
