Tenure-Track Faculty (Open Rank), Mechanical Engineering
Office of Academic Affairs
Reports to: Program Director of Engineering
Position Start Date: August, 2026
Salary Range: $70,500-$92,250
Period: 10-month position
Position Overview:
The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Science & Technology at Quincy University is seeking a passionate, full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (with tenure) to augment the rapidly growing Mechanical Engineering program. This individual will play a pivotal role in helping to mold and shape the program in line with the university’s mission as a Franciscan, Catholic, liberal arts institution emphasizing the development of servant leaders. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, curriculum development, academic integrity, scholarly research, and mentoring students in a close-knit academic environment.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will include teaching multiple undergraduate courses and labs within the Mechanical Engineering curriculum, such as computer-aided design, measurement and instrumentation, materials science, thermodynamics, control systems, machine design, and heat transfer, in addition to overseeing capstone design projects. Additional responsibilities will include developing new courses, engaging in scholarly research (ideally involving undergraduate students), advising, contributing to departmental and university service, and actively contributing to the ABET accreditation process.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Theoretical & Applied Mechanics, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program prior to start date
• A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring
• A proven track record of high-quality scholarly research, and a desire to involve undergraduates in research
• A strong commitment to ethics and academic integrity
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• An appreciation for the merits of liberal arts education, including interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning
• Familiarity with the ABET accreditation process and a commitment to participate therein
Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior research as part of a recognized, externally-funded research program
• Prior experience working in industry or for a national lab
• Current PE license
• Prior experience and participation in the ABET accreditation process
What Sets Quincy University Apart:
• Opportunities to shape the program. New faculty have the rare and exciting opportunity to help mold and shape the program from the ground up. The successful candidate will actively participate in refining the curriculum, developing new courses, purchasing new lab equipment, hiring additional faculty and staff members, establishing departmental policies, mentoring new student organizations, etc.
• Small student-to-faculty ratio. Currently, every engineering class has fewer than 15 students, and we intend to maintain this small student-to-faculty ratio as the program continues to grow. For faculty, that translates to significantly less grading and significantly more of doing the things that really matter, like engaging with students
• Flexibility for research. As a liberal arts university, we value scholarly research and the role it plays in higher education while rejecting the “publish or perish” culture that has become so prevalent at many institutions. We emphasize quality over quantity, giving faculty the flexibility to pursue meaningful and interesting research at an appropriate pace
• Valid teaching performance metrics. We understand the well-documented problems associated with “traditional” measures commonly used in higher education as proxies for actual teaching performance. That is why we base our teaching assessment on valid metrics, such as classroom observations, rigor of instruction, holding students to high standards, consistent enforcement of academic integrity policies, etc.
• Ideal location. Situated on the bank of the Mississippi River, and within driving distance of St. Louis, Chicago, and Kansas City, Quincy offers an idyllic academic retreat with all the charm of the Midwest and all the benefits of a lively college town.
Benefits:
We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance; Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA); life insurance; long-term and short-term disability coverage; holidays; parental leave; a 403(b) retirement plan; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents.
About the program:
The Engineering Program at Quincy University, comprised of bachelor’s programs in both Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, was launched in Fall 2024 and is on schedule for ABET accreditation in AY2028-2029. New laboratory and teaching spaces are currently being constructed as part of a $4.2 million facilities remodeling project.
