Pinocchio Children’s opera

March 1, 2020 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

| Free

In conjunction with the Muddy River Opera, students from Quincy University and John Wood Community College will perform the children’s opera “Pinocchio” on Sunday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the Connie Niemann Center for Music (17th and Seminary Road). This performance is free and open to the public. Donations appreciated.

This operatic version of the children’s literary classic, “Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi, was adapted for children by opera and concert singer John Davies and is based on scenes from operas by W.A. Mozart, G. Donizetti, J. Offenbach and G.B. Pergolesi. “Pinocchio” follows the story of a wooden boy and demonstrates to children the value of being truthful. The one-hour opera is fast-paced and uses both new and familiar characters to introduce children to the unique storytelling form of opera.
The opera is under the direction of Connie Philips, with assistance from QU’s Amy Stollberg, director of choirs and JWCC’s Steven Soebbing, Ph.D. instructor of music and theater, at JWCC and accompanied by pianist, Laura Kammerer. The opera boasts a cast comprised of Quincy University students, Camryn Current, Brianna Berger, Makayla, Caleb Harmon, Rachel Reinbeck and Grace Riley; and JWCC students, Josh Hetzler and Austin Owen.
