Music

The Music Program of the Division of Fine Arts and Communication at Quincy University offers four-year music degrees to vocal and instrumental music majors in two degree formats: Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Music Education.  For students interested in the music industry, a Bachelor of Arts degree is offered combining courses in communication and music production.

All incoming students planning to major in music or music education must successfully complete an audition before the music faculty to be accepted into the Music Program as music majors.  Other program requirements are listed in detail on page 97 of the QU catalog.  Non-majors are welcome to participate in a variety of music ensembles pending successful auditions before the appropriate music faculty.

Admission to the University does not constitute entrance into the music program. All students wishing to major in music must audition before members of the music faculty prior to acceptance as a music major.

Features

All public performances by individuals and ensembles of the Music Program are professionally recorded onto CD and DVD then archived in the music library for further use.  Students receive training in audio recording and production in our Solano Recording Studio.  Students also receive instruction in a variety of computer software applications in our MIDI lab including audio/video editing and production software as well as sight-singing/ear-training and music composition software.

Special or unique advantages of the QU program in this major field:

Unlike larger university classrooms, the Music Program at QU provides the unique advantage of its small classroom size allowing for improved interaction among students and between students and their teachers.  This atmosphere provides excellent opportunities for social interaction.  Another unique advantage is the diversity of ensemble experience available to music majors and non-majors alike.

Possible Careers

The Bachelor of Science in music education degree prepares students for the professional world of music teaching.  The Music Program takes great pride in fully preparing highly qualified teachers for the evolving and technologically challenging world of education.  The Bachelor of Arts in music prepares students for performance as professional musicians and for graduate level studies.  The Bachelor of Arts in communication and music production is our newest degree.  It prepares students for professional employment in the areas of broadcast media, the film and audio recording industry, radio and television production, and other areas of the music business.
