Understanding FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of a student’s educational records. Once a student enrolls in college, FERPA rights transfer from parents to the student, regardless of age.

This means that, in most cases, the University cannot share academic, financial, or disciplinary information with parents or family members without the student’s written consent. FERPA encourages students to take responsibility for managing their academic and personal information while respecting family involvement.

Quincy University is committed to complying with FERPA while supporting healthy communication between students and their families. Students may choose to grant parents or designated individuals access to certain records, and families are encouraged to discuss expectations and communication preferences with their student early in the college experience. Visit Quincy University’s FERPA policy.
