Quincy University Occupational Therapy Doctorate Students Gain Real-World Experiences at The Illinois Veterans Home

Quincy University Occupational Therapy Doctorate faculty and students visited the Illinois Veterans Home on Oct. 22 to facilitate activities with residents as part of their coursework.

“I had a great experience at the Veterans Home. The residents have such beautiful spirits,” said Cawhan Smith, a student in the class of 2028. “I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to share time together. I would do this hundreds of times if I could.”

The visit allowed students in the “Occupational-Centered Assessment and Intervention: Adults and Older Adults” class to apply classroom concepts in a real-world setting. Students practiced therapeutic communication, activity analysis and adaptation to support engagement, social connection and quality of life for the residents.

“One of the priorities of QU’s OTD program is providing opportunities for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom in meaningful, real-world scenarios,” said Kristin Haas, professor and founding program director. “Our visit to the Illinois Veterans Home allows students to connect their knowledge of aging, occupational performance and therapeutic activity with the individuals they will be serving. It also provides an opportunity to give back to the veterans who have served our country and the Quincy community.”
