Quincy University dedicated the Fr. Augustus Tolton Memorial Sign on the east side of the East Wing of Francis Hall at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 in honor of his extraordinary faith, courage and perseverance.
“The dedication of the Fr. Augustus Tolton Memorial Sign is a powerful reminder of Quincy University’s Franciscan and Catholic heritage,” said Fr. John Doctor, vice president of campus mission and ministry. “By welcoming Augustus Tolton in 1878, the Franciscan friars affirmed his dignity and supported his calling to the priesthood at a time when racial discrimination denied him opportunities elsewhere. His story continues to challenge us to uphold the dignity of every person and ensure that all are welcomed, valued, and empowered to fulfill their God-given potential”
Born into slavery, Augustus Tolton escaped to freedom in Illinois and was admitted to St. Francis Solanus College (now Quincy University) in 1878 by the Franciscan Friars after facing widespread racial rejection. Because every American seminary barred him due to his race, he completed his priestly studies at the Pontifical Urban College in Rome, where he was ordained in 1886.
Upon returning to the United States, Tolton became widely recognized as the country’s first publicly known Black Catholic priest. He served congregations in Quincy and Chicago until his death in 1897. In 2019, Pope Francis declared him “Venerable,” advancing his cause for sainthood in the Catholic Church.
