Quincy University’s student-athletes will kick off their upcoming seasons with faith, unity and purpose at the annual Blessing of the Athletes ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in St. Francis Solanus Church, 1721 College Ave.
This annual tradition is a time set aside to celebrate the gifts and blessings each athlete brings to their sport and to the university.
“The Blessing of Athletes invites each student-athlete to strive to become the best version of themselves—not only in their particular sport, but also as members of the Quincy University community,” said Fr. John Doctor, OFM, ’72, vice president for mission and ministry. “It calls them to recognize that their gifts, talents, and abilities are blessings from God, and that the proper response to these gifts is one of gratitude. Through this blessing, we pray that our athletes will use their God-given gifts with humility, purpose and excellence, both in competition and in their life as members of our university community.”
QU student-athletes will process from the main campus to St. Francis Solanus Church at 6:50 p.m. Teams will sit together for the service, which includes scripture readings, a parish blessing and a candlelight closing ceremony.
