Federal Work Study Programs
The Federal Work Study (FWS) Program provides eligible students with part-time, on-campus employment opportunities that help offset educational expenses while offering valuable work experience. Students typically work between 8 and 12 hours per week in positions designed to fit around their academic schedules. Available job opportunities are posted by the Office of Financial Aid, with priority given to students who indicate interest in Federal Work Study on their FAFSA and meet the priority filing deadline.
Established by the U.S. Department of Education, the Federal Work Study Program is designed to assist students in meeting educational costs while reducing reliance on student loans. Not all students are eligible to participate; eligibility is determined through the financial aid process and will be noted on a student’s Award Letter if applicable.
Unlike other types of financial aid, Federal Work Study funds are earned through hours worked in an approved position and are paid accordingly. The program’s primary goal is to support educational expenses while helping students gain experience and keep student debt to a minimum.
Finding and Applying for Work-Study Jobs
Students are responsible for securing their own on-campus employment. Each August, an on-campus job fair is held on the first Monday after students return to campus, offering an opportunity to meet supervisors and learn about available positions. Many students use the earnings from their work-study jobs to help cover ongoing expenses such as personal and transportation costs.
Once hired, students must complete all required employment documentation before beginning work. Required forms and materials include:
- Federal Work Study Student Employment Contract
- Federal Form I-9
- Federal Form W-4
- Illinois Form W-4
- Work Study FERPA Form
- Direct Deposit Authorization (optional, for paycheck deposit)
- Driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Social Security card or a certified copy of a birth certificate
Students may not begin working until all required forms and documentation have been completed and submitted.
