Faculty question #5 What will you do moving forward that you didn’t do before?

Bill Machold, MM,
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MUSIC, DIRECTOR OF BANDS
I believe that I will continue to incorporate guest lecturers through online meeting technologies as I found it to be a great learning opportunity for our students. It’s like attending a professional workshop or clinic without leaving your classroom and students always benefit from hearing from other professionals outside of their professors. I also learned to use Moodle more than I have in the past and will likely continue to incorporate that as well.

Brian D. Royer,
MS, LMHC, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE
I may incorporate some video lectures on specific concepts that I feel are most important for my students to focus on and learn. That will also serve as a “study guide” to help prepare for quizzes and exams.

Anna Shajirat, PhD,
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH
I am going to be more flexible about deadlines than I was before. I have always had a no-tolerance policy for late work except for emergency situations. I have realized, however, that many students who experience circumstances beyond their control, such as work and family issues, do not believe that their situations count as emergencies and so do not ask for the accommodations that they need. My late work policy did not take into account the challenges that many QU students face in their lives outside the classroom. Going forward, I will revise my late work policy so that it is accessible and accommodating for all students.

Minerva Cruz,
PhD, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
OF HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION
I will include more videos of myself to online courses and I will contact all my students individually at the very beginning of the semester to be sure they do not have any personal situations impeding them from completing the tasks and meeting deadlines in class. Although I have done something similar to this in all my courses and before the pandemic, I plan to include it as a regular task in all my courses at the very beginning of the semester. I think it is important for students to understand that professors understand their struggles as students. Before we became professors, we were students like they are now, and we had similar struggles. We just need to show our students those values that define who we are as professors.

Kimberly Hale, PhD, CHAIR,
DIVISION OF SCIENCES AND
TECHNOLOGY; PROFESSOR
OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
I will try to mix in more virtual aspects even for face-to-face classes. I will try to be more organized.

Eylsia Mahoney, MS,
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SPORT MANAGEMENT
I am planning to add more audio and video lectures to my on-campus classes via moodle. I also plan on adding a technology piece to each class where we will learn how to use new apps, software, or other tech platforms.
