Artist Statement of Maureen Brodsky

I wouldn’t be an artist if I hadn’t spent my childhood summers at my grandparents’ farm, roaming the fields and avoiding the open mine shafts that dotted the woods down the steep hill from my grandparents’ mining office home.

I wouldn’t be an artist if I hadn’t marveled in the glories of the paintings in art museums and begun collecting postcards from every visit, creating a personal record of images that moved me.

I wouldn’t be an artist if I hadn’t painted wild flowers at my grandparents’ farm with little watercolor pans.

I wouldn’t be an artist if, as an adult, I hadn’t returned to the forgotten Missouri Ozark foothills to paint and explore and document the fallow fields and old rivers that etch their way through the hilly countryside.

I wouldn’t be an artist if I didn’t paint wildflowers at my mother’s cabin and try to convey their impact on my eternal soul.

I wouldn’t be an artist if I didn’t show you my work and keep my fingers crossed that the themes that resonate with me would touch your inner wonder.
