QU POLIS: Ulysses S. Grant

April 5 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This class is taught by Beth Young.

This class will look at the entire life of Ulysses S. Grant.  Few Americans have dealt with as many extreme highs and lows as did Grant.  An indifferent student raised by an uncompromising, demanding, and conniving father; a graduate of West Point; a hero of the Mexican-American War; a failure in the peace-time military; a possible alcoholic; an unsuccessful farmer; a failed businessman; the mastermind of Lincoln’s Army during the Civil War; and a two-term US President, Grant was “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”  At the time of his death, he was probably the most revered man in the nation.
