QU POLIS: History of Modern Israel
November 1, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Patrick Hotle will trace the history of the modern state of Israel from its origins in the nineteenth century to the present. Along the way, he will discuss the ideological, religious, social, political and historical dynamics that led to the independence of Israel in 1948 and its evolution into a highly successful Middle Eastern powerhouse. Necessary to an understanding of this, of course, is also a consideration of the seemingly insolvable problems stemming from the presence of a growing Palestinian population, the antipathy of Arab states and the re-emergence of religious fundamentalism. Based on his recent travels to Israel and participation in the Schusterman Summer Institute for Israel Studies at Brandeis University, he will finish by presenting an update on the status of Israeli affairs in 2018.
Lecturer: Dr. C. Patrick Hotle, John Sperry Jr. Endowed Chair of Humanities, Professor of History and Director of Travel Studies, Culver-Stockton College
Class will be held in the North Campus North Cafeteria
