Facets of the American Civil War

May 8, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

If you are interested in the American Civil War, its literature, and/or its visual art, this short course may be the one for you. The class will focus on the areas of slavery, medicine, battles, Lincoln, and military mascots (yes, pets were with the troops) as we look at various pieces of visual art and literature which enhance the study of each of these five areas. Also included will be a discussion of little-known facts and unusual bits of knowledge connected to these areas.
While several short readings will be presented in class, attendees may want to read the following works before the class. These pieces are found on the Internet and will provide a basis for some of the discussions.

• Lincoln’s “Second Inaugural Address”
• Whitman’s poem “O Captain! My Captain!”
• Jourdon Anderson’s letter “To My Old Master”
• Frederick Douglass’ ” Fourth of July Oration – 1852″
• Lincoln’s poem “The Maniac”
• “Another Yankee Doodle” Anonymous poem
• Oliver Wendell Holmes’ poem “Brother Jonathan’s Lament”
• “Charge of the Mule Brigade” Anonymous poem
