Baker Academic will publish the book. The book was written in part as an academic monograph and a textbook; its purpose is to summarize and advance the theological field as well as to create new knowledge.

Bates’ second book, The Birth of the Trinity, was published and released by Oxford Press University in March 2015, and the paperback edition released in Nov. 2016.

“There’s a possible strand of evidence that hadn’t been explored, which was arguing that there was a certain way of reading the Old Testament that led to the development of the Doctrine of the Trinity, that we see even in the New Testament. It’s a technique of reading called, prosopological exegesis,” said Bates.

Salvation by Allegiance Alone, is Bates’ third book following, The Birth of the Trinity: Jesus, God, and Spirit in New Testament and Early Christian Interpretations of the Old Testament, and, The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation: The Center of Paul’s Method of Scriptural Interpretation.

“You grow as a writer the more you do and it forces me to think about my material in ways that I hadn’t before. It has been a delight to try and take my preliminary ideas and to work through the process of them being refined for myself,” said Bates. “It is very important to me that I was able to write the book with some of that devotional quality. I’m glad that my love for God was still able to be communicated in the text even though it is a monograph.”

In addition, Bates, along with Dr. Matthew Lynch, co-hosts a podcast called On Script, conversations on current biblical scholarship. Bates focuses on the New Testament and related literature. On Script podcasts can be listened to at www.onscript.study.
