Quincy University is pleased to announce Karl Warma, assistant professor of art, as the recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award. He joined the Quincy University faculty in the fall of 2006. Warma was nominated by the Excellence in Teaching committee, which is comprised of faculty members and students. Warma holds a M.F.A. in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College (Plainview, Vt.). He studied communication sciences at the University of Connecticut, illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and holds a B.A. in interdisciplinary liberal arts from Western Illinois University. “Any time you are honored by your students and peers it is really something special,” said Warma. “Teaching at Quincy University and being surrounded by such a caring and talented community has been a wonderful experience.”
Warma can often be found at Quincy University events, capturing special moments in an artist’s rendering or working on design or communication programs for various college departments. He is known for his rigorous expectations inside the classroom and his willingness to listen and talk to students outside of the classroom, offering constant support and appreciation. Numerous pieces of Warma’s artwork have been on display in the Gray Gallery for the annual art faculty exhibition and the Great River Watercolor Society exhibition. He also serves on the selection committee for the competitive annual Student Juried Show. Warma is a valued member of the division of fine arts and communication, an academic unit that prizes and celebrates teamwork, and the partnership between Warma and his colleagues has been exemplary.
