QU Students take Civil Rights Trip
9 QU students travel to Alabama on a Civil Rights Trip. They will interact with those who played a role in the Civil Rights movement.
The Office of Multicultural and Leadership Programs will take 9 QU students and 4 QU staff to Alabama (Selma, Montgomery and Birmingham) on a Civil Rights Trip. The trip will allow students to interact first-hand with those who played a role in the Civil Rights movement and hear of their stories. Students will visit with Ms. Joanne Bland (Selma), Mr. Jake Williams (Montgomery) and Ms. Carolyn McKinstry (Birmingham). "Textbooks provide great foundational insight to history, but when you have the opportunity to engage with those who actively had a hand in creating history and can give actual recounts of events, you can't pass that opportunity up," said Natasha Ramsey, Director of Multicultural and Leadership Program. The group will leave the evening of January 11 and will return January 15.
Following the trip, the Office of Multicultural and Leadership Programs will host the first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 16, 2012. The office has connected with many non-profit organizations in the community. Those organizations will provide opportunities for QU students to volunteer at their sites. Approximately 50 QU students are signed up to volunteer at 8 participating sites. Sites include: Madonna House, Quanada, Quincy Public Library, Quincy Animal Shelter, Horizons, Chaddock, YMCA and Alzheimer's Association. The event will kick-off at 10:30 a.m. with guest speaker Assistant Pastor Tim Southers of Cathedral of Worship at the Quincy University chapel. This event is open to the public.
