Program Requirements

 

Bachelor of Arts in Biology

  1. General requirements for baccalaureate degree, p. 8.
  2. Core classes: BIO 150, 212, 497 (senior year)
  3. 30 hours of Biology electives at the 200+ level.
  4. CHE 125; two semesters of Physics (PHY 211-212).
  5. One semester of mathematics at the highest level for which the student is prepared with college algebra as a minimum.
  6. One semester of a statistics course.
  7. The student needs a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all BIO(logy) courses to receive a degree.
  8. The student needs a minimum of 39 semester hours at the 300-400 level (all courses) to receive a degree.

 

Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences
(Environmental Concentration)

  1. General requirements for baccalaureate degree (p. 7).
  2. Core classes: BIO 150, 212, 222, 327, 332, 434, 450, and 497 (senior year).
  3. Environmental requirements: BIO 221, 357, 358, 435, 436, 480 (3 semester hours).
  4. Required Science classes: CHE 150-151, CHE 302-303, PHY 211-212, CHE 321 (highly recommended).
  5. Required Math classes: MAT 242 and a statistics course.
  6. The student needs a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all BIO(logy) courses to receive a degree.
  7. The student needs a minimum of 39 semester hours at the 300-400 level (ALL COURSES) to receive a degree.
  8. PHI 325 (Environmental Ethics) is strongly recommended.

Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences
(Medical Concentration)

  1. General requirements for baccalaureate degree.
  2. Core classes: BIO 150, 212, 222, 327, 434, 450, 497 (senior year).
  3. Medical requirements: BIO 325, 329, 330, 332, 364, 433.
  4. Required Science classes: CHE 150-151, CHE 302-303, PHY 211-212, (CHE 321 highly recommended).
  5. Required Math classes: MAT 242 and a statistics course.
  6. The student needs a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all BIO(logy) courses to receive a degree.
  7. The student needs a minimum of 39 semester hours at the 300-400 level (ALL COURSES) to receive a degree.
  8. PHI 323 (Bioethical Questions) is strongly recommended.

Teacher Certification
  1. General requirements for baccalaureate degree with the following required courses: POL 200 and PSY 246, HIS 111 or HIS 112, PED 265.
  2. Core classes: BIO 150, BIO 212, BIO 222, 327, 434, 450, 497 (senior year).
  3. Biological certification requirements: BIO 221, 329, 330, 332, or 435; SCI 357.
  4. Required Science classes: CHE 150-151, CHE 302-303, PHY 211-212, (CHE 321 highly recommended).
  5. Required Math classes: MAT 242 and a statistics course.
  6. Other courses required for Teacher Certification: COM 101, Global Studies course (Teacher Education Handbook); EDU 213, 214, 290, 291, 325, 354, 390, 391, 496; SPE 229; and BIO 400.
  7. To be admitted into the teacher education program, the student needs a minimum GPA of 2.600 cumulative grade point average, and a 2.0 GPA in all BIO(logy) and SCI(ence) courses. Additional requirements for admission into the teacher education program are listed in the Education Program page. The students needs a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all BIO(logy) and SCI(ence) courses to receive a degree.
  8. The student needs a minimum of 39 semester hours of coursework at 300-400 level (ALL COURSES) to receive a degree.

Requirements for a Minor:

The Biology Program offers various programs of study for a Minor. The student should consult with one of the biology faculty members early in order to prepare for such a program.

Coursework for a minor includes 18 hours of BIO(logy) credit, only 4 of which may be at the 100 level.
