Biology
The Division of Science and Mathematics at Quincy University offers
two four-year undergraduate programs in Biology: the Bachelor
of Science degree in Biological Sciences and the Bachelor of Arts degree
in Biology. The Bachelor of Arts in Biology is less structured than the
Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and involves less chemistry
and mathematics.
Biology majors take two semesters of Fundamentals of
Chemistry during their freshman year followed by two semesters
of Organic Chemistry. Biochemistry is a recommended elective
for students interested in organismal biology. Two semesters of Fundamentals
of Physics and a minimum math requirement of Calculus I and a statistics
course round out the physical science and math background. A course in
the use of a computer is included in the program. Biology majors take one semester of Introductory Chemistry
and one semester of Organic/Biochemistry. Biochemistry
is a recommended elective for students interested in
organismal biology. Two semesters of Fundamentals of Physics
and a minimum math requirement of Calculus I and a statistics
course round out the physical science and mathematics
background. The Biology program offers a secondary teacher certification
program in conjunction with the Division of Education
for majors seeking certification as secondary teachers. The University maintains an environmental science field
station on the Mississippi River in support of the
environmental science program. The University is
also a host site for Illinois RiverWatch, an ecosystem monitoring
network throughout the United States.
Most of the courses involve laboratory activities which provide a student
the opportunity to use a variety of science techniques and apparatus.
Many of the laboratory exercises for the environmental biology courses
involve field activities at a number of sites around Quincy. The Ornithology
course includes a two- or three-day trip to the sandhill crane staging
area along the Platte River in Nebraska. The trip provides the student
with an opportunity to observe a variety of
waterfowl and western birds. In pursuance of its various degree programs including those in the
biological and health sciences, Quincy University is academically
affiliated with the following hospitals:
-
St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Medical Technology,
Belleville, Illinois
-
St. John’s Hospital School of Medical Technology,
Springfield, Illinois
-
St. John’s Mercy Medical Center School of Medical
Technology, St. Louis, Missouri
-
OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, Illinois
The Biology program prepares students to pursue a number of
career options in fields where a good general background in
biology and the other sciences is needed. These areas include
pharmaceutical sales, laboratory assistants, and some health-related
positions. Further study at the graduate level is possible
with additional coursework.
Advanced Placement Opportunity:
CLEP General Biology Exam may yield 3 semester
hours of credit for BIO 150.
CLEP Microbiology Exam may yield 3 semester hours
of credit for BIO 159.
