Biological Sciences

The Division of Science and Technology at Quincy University offers two four-year undergraduate programs in Biology: the Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. The Bachelor of Arts in Biology is less structured than the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and involves less chemistry and mathematics.

Biological Sciences majors take two semesters of Fundamentals of Chemistry during their freshman year followed by two semesters of Organic Chemistry. Biochemistry is a recommended elective for students interested in organismal biology. Two semesters of Fundamentals of Physics and a minimum math requirement of Calculus I and a statistics course round out the physical science and math background.  The Biological Sciences degree has two choices of concentration, medical and environmental, with a slate of courses matched to the needs of each.

Biology majors take one semester of Chemistry and two semesters of Fundamentals of Physics.  A minimum math requirement of college algebra and a statistics course round out the physical science and mathematics background.  Thirty-nine hours of biology courses at the 300-400 level allow the student to customize his/her education.

The Biology program offers a secondary teacher certification program in conjunction with the School of Education for majors seeking certification as junior high and high school teachers.  A degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences is offered in conjunction with affiliated hospitals.

Technological proficiency is reinforced by many lab exercises in the program, as most of the courses involve laboratory activities which provide a student the opportunity to use a variety of techniques and instruments.  Many of the laboratory exercises for the environmental and field courses involve trips to a variety of natural areas around Quincy.

Students have the opportunity to take a cadaver anatomy course.  When demand is sufficient, a course that includes a trip to the Galápagos Islands is offered.  Biology majors have been active in Missouri Stream Team and Monarch Watch for several years.

Advanced Placement Opportunity:
CLEP General Biology Exam may yield 3 semester hours of credit for BIO 150.

CLEP Microbiology Exam may yield 3 semester hours of credit for BIO 232
