Nursing
The Quincy University Nursing Program prepares students for the diverse and rewarding career of nursing. QU’s Nursing degree is offered in cooperation with Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing (BRCN). Blessing-Rieman is affiliated with Blessing Hospital, one of the finest health care facilities in the Midwest. Blessing was named an NLN (National League of Nursing) Center of Excellence in Nursing Education for 2006-2009.
Graduates of the Quincy University/Blessing-Rieman program have experienced a 100% placement rate over the past years with most securing employment several months before graduation. This placement rate in combination with a 90+% pass rate on the state boards are proven outcomes of the QU/BRCN program.
Curriculum
The Nursing Program features a fully integrated curriculum, with nursing courses beginning the sophomore year and most junior and senior level courses on the BRCN campus just a few blocks from QU’s campus. Each course builds on the other in a progressive manner and is developed from the curriculum outcome. At Blessing-Rieman students will utilize the Blessing Health Professions Library, a computer lab with the latest software for nursing research; and the Skills Lab, a facility that replicates the hospital and clinical settings.
Nursing Tracks
• Basic Degree Track
The Basic Degree Track is designed for students entering the program with no previous nursing education.
• LPN-BSN Degree Track
Students with an LPN license may complete their BSN in about 3 years, provided they have the prerequisites completed.
• Transfer-Sophomore Degree Track
Transfer students with the appropriate prerequisites may enter as sophomores.
Personal Relationships
Students enrolled in the Nursing Program experience the kind of personal relationships with professors that are often not possible at larger universities. The faculty members in the Nursing Program help students plan for their futures by counseling them to explore their interests and then tailoring their academic programs to support these interests. Upper-level classes are kept small in order to facilitate discussion and team learning. The small class size also allows for one-on-one interaction with and immediate feedback from instructors.
Field Experience
Nursing students engage in clinical experiences at Blessing Hospital and other health care organizations throughout their undergraduate experience. Internships are offered during the summers after the sophomore and junior years. A capstone clinical experience is offered during the senior year. BRCN students have the opportunity to participate in mission trips, foreign nursing experiences, professional seminars and conventions, and many other community and professional nursing learning opportunities.
Career Opportunities
The Nursing Program prepares students for careers in such areas as hospitals, home health care, military service, corporations, and wellness centers – wherever people need specialized care. Graduates of Quincy University and Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing are also well prepared for graduate school and the careers that follow, including Nurse Practitioners, Anesthetists, Educators, and Administrators.
