English

Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English by completing the general requirements for the baccalaureate degree and by taking 33 semester hours in 200-400 level English courses, including the senior seminar (ENG 497). Students must also take one year (six hours) of a foreign language or demonstrate equivalent competency. English majors are able to graduate with honors by maintaining a 3.5 GPA in the major, by taking six hours of history beyond the general education requirements, and by taking two years (twelve hours) of a foreign language. Students may earn minors in English, in areas of literature or writing, by taking 18 semester hours of appropriate English courses at the 200-400 level.
The degree in English includes courses in periods of literature, in writing and in teaching. Some literature courses include: American literature, World literature, British literature, and literature by women. Writing courses include creative writing, advanced writing and business communication. A variety of special topics courses are also offered, such as comedy in literature and literature in film. In addition, internship and practicum opportunities are provided.
Areas of Study:
Career Opportunities:
English majors have enjoyed internship experiences at over 30 Quincy area corporations and agencies in activities such as public relations, management information systems, publishing, internet applications, research, business communication, marketing and sales.
English majors have many internship and career opportunities for several reasons. The key reason is that the field focuses upon language. People who have learned how to use language will find that they have a special and uncommon skill that will serve them well in society and the working world. Many English majors have succeeded in law school, for example, for the study of law is in great part the study of language. Critical language skills are useful in complex corporate undertakings. Skills in analysis and written communication are valuable assets in business. In addition, the adaptability skills learned in the study of literature and language are useful in dealing with the demands of a changing work environment. English majors who also take coursework in fields like communication, business and computer science find internships and career opportunities in many corporate settings. Many Quincy University alumni who were English majors and who are now employers seek graduates and interns with majors in English.
Advanced Placement Opportunity:
In the interest of full development of reading, writing, and thinking skills, the University does not accept CLEP credit in composition or literature. AP credit is accepted for ENG 111 only (upon submission of scores of 4 or 5).
