Music Education
Program Requirements

An audition before the music faculty. All incoming students
planning to major in music or music education must complete
this audition before being accepted as a Music Major.

All transfer students must take a placement exam in
music theory prior to registration.
-
All music majors must take MUS 117 to fulfill their
Fine Arts requirements.

All music majors must enroll in Concert Attendance (MUS
070) every semester until they pass five semesters.
-
All music majors must take Keyboard Harmony their first
semester at Quincy University.
-
All music majors must take applied piano every semester
until they complete piano proficiency.
-
All music majors must complete the Sophomore Proficiency
process with a passing grade before being admitted to
upper level courses in the major.

A minimum grade of C- is required in all major courses
to count toward the major or minor. A minimum 2.0 cumulative
average in the major or minor is required.

which can be obtained from music advisors.
Bachelor of Arts in Music
(Concentration in Instrumental or Vocal Music)

General requirements for baccalaureate degree.
-
14 credit hours of applied music lessons on one instrument
or voice (major).
-
20 credit hours of music courses, including: MUS 113-114,
115-116, 213-214, and 311-312.

Vocal Recital Seminar (MUS 332) is required of all those
whose major performing medium is voice.
-
Required performances: Recitals during junior and senior
years in the major applied field. Six additional public
performances as a soloist in faculty approved concerts.

Attendance at designated recitals and concerts at the
University or in the community.

Those whose major performing medium is voice must take
MUS 219-220. Those whose major performing medium is voice
must take MUS 219-220.

The senior recital and recital paper constitute the
required comprehensive experience.
Bachelor of Science in Music Education
(Concentration in Instrumental Music)

Requirements for a Minor:
The music minor consists of 18/19 hours plus ensemble participation.

Required foundation courses: MUS 113-114 Music Theory
I and II; MUS 115-116 Sight Singing and Ear Training
I and II; MUS 117 Exploring Music; and two credit hours
of Applied Music.

Following completion of foundation courses, student
must choose one of the following areas of concentration:
Music Theory, Music History, Music Performance, or Music
Education. A total of five or six credit hours in one
of these areas will complete the Minor. Suggested courses
for each area:
Music Theory:

Applied Music (usually one credit per semester;
students will perform on department convocations)

MED 317 Elementary School Music - 2 hrs.
MED 341 Junior and Senior High School Music - 2 hrs.
MED 320 Percussion Methods - 2 hrs.
MED 349 Choral Methods - 3 hrs.
MED 351 Instrumental Methods - 3 hrs.
MED 412 Woodwind Methods - 2 hrs.
MED 413 Brass Methods - 2 hrs.
MED 330 Intro to Orchestral Instruments - 2 hrs.

Students are expected to perform in an ensemble for
a minimum of four semesters. Students with an area of
concentration in Music Performance must perform in one
ensemble each semester for a total of eight semesters.

Each student pursuing a Minor in Music must have an
advisor from the Music faculty.
