Art

The Art Program of the Division of Fine Arts and Communication at Quincy University offers a four-year B.S. Degree in Graphic Design; a four-year B.F.A. in Studio Art is available by arrangement. The Art Program also collaborates with the Psychology Program and the School of Business to offer degree curricula.

Applicants may compete for a number of portfolio scholarships awarded each year on the basis of portfolio excellence. The competition is open to all high school graduates and transfer students. An applicant may be considered for the scholarships once all application requirements are met: transcript, financial aid package, letter of recommendation, and portfolio (either slide, CD, or actual work). To be considered for an art scholarship the applicant must declare or intend to declare a major in art.

Mission of the Art Program

The mission of the Art Program is to help students through their various investigations and to discover:

  • how to become more visually literate.  This suggests acquiring a competency in the non-verbal language of art and design.
  • strategies in developing critical skills through verbal and written accounts of historical and contemporary art issues
  • the capacity of solve problems within a variety of contexts.
  • ways to develop competencies in the areas of 2-D and 3-D art and design.
  • traditional and current technologies used in creating art
  • the need for self-evaluation regarding one’s own artworks and those of others
  • the development (through these cumulative learning experiences) of the capacity for independent work in the art and design professions
  • the professional standards required of being a good artist
  • the business of being an artist.

Learning Outcomes:  Graphic Design

In accord with the standards of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design,  the Quincy University art faculty have set the following outcomes. A graduate of the QU BFA program in Graphic Design will:

  • Demonstrate a command of the elements and principles of design.
  • Be able to express ideas, image, and events through draftsmanship and other 2-D and 3-D media.
  • Understand art in the context of history and culture.
  • Be computer literate, understanding the fundamentals of hardware, software, storage, and best working practices.
  • Be productive in the prominent industry software through appropriate inputs and outputs.
  • Be creative problem solvers in a variety of contexts.
  • Have an understanding of message and audience and how to shape them appropriately and ethically, especially with respect to the laws and principles of copyright.
  • Be able to use some aspect of time-based media.
  • Understand the process of creating electronic and print portfolios that embody professional standards.
  • Be able to articulate key aesthetic terms and concepts in discussion and in writing.

FEATURES

The graphic design lab provides students with opportunities to work with professional software and printing equipment.   Many students develop minors in Communication (typically Broadcast or Public Relations) and become familiar with the features of the broadcast studio and editing facility. Students also take advantage of QU’s unique minor in Entrepreneurship which focuses on the proficiencies needed by an arts professional.

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS

The Art Club is active on campus, and students in the Art major frequently participate in productions of the Drama Club and the Theatre Program as well as assisting in production of the student newspaper.

POSSIBLE CAREERS  

Graduates of the program have experienced success in diverse careers;  they include interior designers, graphic designers, art therapists, university art professors,  web designers, museum curators,  directors of advertising agencies, gallery directors, and professional artists. Graphic design is rapidly-growing area with careers available in large and small businesses as well as free-lance work and agency ownership.
