American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor
The Department of Speech and Hearing Science (SHS) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a highly qualified individual who is committed to quality instruction, curriculum development, and program maintenance for its ASL program. This individual must be able to teach ASL at all levels of proficiency and may be assigned to teach courses relating to Deaf culture and society. This is a full-time, academic year (nine month), non-tenure track position with full benefits.
The SHS Department is committed to growing its ASL Program in order to provide instruction in this minority language and culture, in addition to offering support for its ASL “track” within the Human Communication Science undergraduate concentration.
Responsibilities for this position include preparing and teaching American Sign Language and Deaf Culture courses within the range of 18-20 contact hours per week per semester. Additional responsibilities also include, but are not limited to, creating class materials, preparing and administering examinations, holding office hours, advising students, and participating in the general maintenance and growth of the ASL Program.
Qualifications: BA/BS degree required; MA degree preferred. American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification preferred, although candidates without such certification will be expected to make reasonable gains toward certification within their first year of employment. Requirements also include native-like competence in American Sign Language, strong English skills, and experience teaching at the university level.
Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
